Two dead in Sumida Ward fire near Tokyo Skytree
Two people were killed Tuesday night after a fire broke out in a crowded residential neighborhood close to Tokyo Skytree, according to local authorities. Around five o'clock in the evening, someone called to report a fire at a two-story residence in Tokyo's Sumida Ward, which prompted an emergency reaction.
Due to the strong winds in the area, the fire quickly spread to at least eight structures, including residential homes. The crowded area presented difficulties, as residents reported that the situation escalated in a matter of minutes.
One neighborhood homeowner, Yoshinori Ito, a 60-year-old company owner, described his experience, saying that he chose to stay inside his house for safety because the smoke was so bad.
The incident was located near Tokyo Skytree, a popular tourist attraction and transmission tower, around 600 meters east of Oshiage Station on the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line.
In addition to determining the amount of damage in the impacted region and looking into the source of the fire, authorities are also helping the displaced inhabitants.
