Opposition agrees to let Home Minister Lamichhane address parliament
KATHMANDU: The opposition parties, including the Nepali Congress (NC), have reached a consensus to permit Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane to address the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting. This agreement was reached during a joint meeting of the opposition parties, convened earlier today before the scheduled HoR session. Gyandendra Shahi, the chief whip of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, confirmed this decision.
Furthermore, the Nepali Congress, representing the opposition bloc, will formally request Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire for permission to allow Home Minister Lamichhane to speak during the parliamentary session. The meeting was attended by key leaders such as NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Chairman Mahantha Thakur, Rastriya Prajatantra Party Vice Chairman Buddi Man Tamang, and other prominent figures.
Previously, the Nepali Congress had been obstructing both the lower and upper house sessions, demanding the formation of a parliamentary committee to investigate Home Minister Lamichhane's alleged involvement in a cooperative fraud case and preventing him from addressing the meetings. However, with the ruling and opposition parties reaching an agreement to establish the probe committee, the opposition parties have agreed to allow Home Minister Lamichhane to address the parliament.
The House of Representatives meeting, originally scheduled for 11 AM today, has yet to commence, likely awaiting the finalization of arrangements following the agreement between the ruling and opposition parties.
