Nepal elected for Vice-President for Asia-Pacific states at UN ECOSOC
KATHMANDU: Nepal has been voted Vice-President of the UN Economic and Social Council, ECOSOC, Asia-Pacific region, with Lok Bahadur Thapa of Nepal's Permanent Mission to the UN in charge. The following year, Nepal is going to head the Asia-Pacific group. According to former Ambassador Sundarnath Bhattarai, this election, which recognizes Nepal's major role in the UN, is consistent with the country's continued commitment to promoting socioeconomic progress and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
Additionally, the 54-member ECOSOC chose Maritza Chan Valverde of Costa Rica for nations in Latin America and the Caribbean and Krzysztof Szczerski of Poland for states in Eastern Europe as Vice-Presidents. The selection of a vice president from the regional group of African States is still pending. Nepal is growing increasingly prominent in global affairs, as seen by its recent election to the ECOSOC as a member for the period 2024-2026.
