In protest, NMA shuts down all services save emergency
Doctors and health workers across Nepal have continued their protest by suspending all services except emergency care today.
The Nepal Medical Association (NMA) decided to halt all non-emergency services starting Monday. Both private and public hospitals have shown support for NMA’s protest.
The protest, organized by the doctors' umbrella group, demands changes to the Consumer Protection Act, 2075, according to an NMA press release.
The doctors decided to keep protesting as the government has yet to take meaningful steps to meet their demands.
They have raised concerns over the Consumer Court’s recent rulings against hospitals, which ordered compensation for alleged medical negligence.
NMA General Secretary Dr. Sanjeev Tiwari stated that medical work is a sensitive, science-based profession and should not be judged like other fields. He called for such cases to be handled by the Nepal Medical Council instead.
The NMA has urged doctors and health workers in the Kathmandu Valley to join the sit-in at Maitighar Mandala, while those outside the Valley are asked to protest at assigned locations.
