Conflict in Myanmar Deepens: 3,000 People Seek Safety in India
Myanmar has had fighting inside the country for a long time. Rebel groups often fight each other and the army. Lately, the fighting has gotten worse in Chin State, where two groups have been battling for over a week, making life harder for people there.
Due to the violence in Chin State, around 3,000 people have fled Myanmar and taken shelter in Mizoram’s Champhai district, India. Most of these refugees began arriving in the border village of Zokhawthar on Saturday and continued through Monday. Many of the people forced to leave their homes are women and children. Some are staying with family, while others are in local shelters where people are giving them food and other basic help.
Lalmuanpuia Punte, advisor to Mizoram’s Chief Minister, went to Zokhawthar and Chin State to talk to leaders of the fighting groups. Most refugees don’t want to return to Myanmar because they are scared the violence will get worse.
This new group of people leaving shows the situation in Myanmar is very serious and that urgent help and peace are needed.
