Euro 2024: PHIL FODEN TEMPORARILY LEAVES ENGLAND CAMP FOR 'PRESSING FAMILY MATTER'
Phil Foden has temporarily left England to return to the UK to deal with personal matters, the Football Association said in a statement. The Manchester City striker has featured in all three of the Three Lions' group games so far, the last of which was Tuesday's goalless draw with Slovenia. England will play the Round of 16 in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday 30 June.
Phil Foden has temporarily left England's Euro 2024 training camp to return to the UK to deal with personal matters, the Football Association has confirmed. The Manchester City forward has been a regular feature for Germany's Three Lions, starting each of their Group C games, most recently in a goalless draw with Slovenia on Tuesday.
In a brief statement, the FA confirmed that Foden had flown back to Britain but did not say whether he would return to Germany ahead of Gareth Southgate's side's last 16 tie in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday. "Phil Foden has temporarily left the England training camp due to urgent family matters and is returning to the UK," the statement said.
Foden and his girlfriend are reportedly expecting their third child.
Foden's partner is believed to be pregnant but there are no complications and the Manchester City star is likely to feature in Sunday's play-off. The 24-year-old was pulled out of draws against Denmark and Slovenia. Although England secured top spot with the latter result, their performances in all three games so far have been heavily criticised. The foot is one of the many review screens.
The striker scored 19 goals and scored 8 assists for their club as they won the fourth Premier League Championship, the annual football writer footballer and Premier League players this season.
But he has been unable to replicate that form on the international stage and Southgate was already forced to defend Foden after England\'s opening game.
“I thought Phil did an exceptional job for us on Sunday,” said Southgate. "Other players attract attention, but the way he works for the team, the way he defends space and the real intelligence in the way he plays.
"Towards the end of the game he kept the ball for us at a crucial time. We are very happy with what Phil did.
Opta statistics show that Foden passed the ball just once to striker Harry Kane at Euro 2024, compared to three passes to goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
England will face one of the four best third-placed teams in the round of 16. As it stands, they will face either the Netherlands or whoever finishes third in Group E.
Romania, Belgium, Ukraine and Slovakia all have three points and England could face any of these sides in the next round.
