Manchester United are 'willing to quadruple the pay' of a Barcelona player linked to Bayern Munich
The 25-year-old has two years left on his contract in Catalonia and has regularly been linked with a move away as the club continue to struggle financially.Bayern Munich are long-term admirers of Araujo, who was previously valued at around €100m. (£86m) but have made no formal attempts to lure the Uruguayan away from his current employers. United are looking to strengthen their options at centre-back following the release of Rafael Varane, and Spanish outlet SPORT claim the 13-time Premier League winners are \"putting a lot of pressure" on Araujo to convince him to join the club. .
The Red Devils are said to be willing to double the wages currently earned by Araujo, who Barcelona, despite their financial struggles, would prefer to keep and tie to a new and improved long-term deal. Barcelona's offer is not believed to be at the level that United can offer, and the club's self-imposed deadline of June 30 to sign Araujo on a new contract is likely to be missed.
Bayern have previously spoken to Araujo to convince him to join, but he remains committed to the Barcelona cause and remains an important teammate. It remains to be seen whether Matija de Ligt's proposed departure from "Allianz Arena" will change this situation.
Can Araujo really join Manchester United?
The fact that United are unwilling to meet Everton's £70m valuation of Jarrar Branthwaite suggests that Araujo's move will not go ahead.United's new regime plans to move away from rash decisions in the transfer market, with one of the main responsibilities of technical director Jason Wilcox and incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth being to get the best value for money. Araujo simply doesn't fit the bill, regardless of his current ability and potential for improvement.
Coupled with the fact that Manchester United also need to bring in a quality midfield and centre, just to ensure stiffer competition for positions, the possibility of spending big on Araujo is further reduced. Barcelona, on the other hand, seem more inclined to give up some valuable options in the future. Rafinha will almost certainly be dropped, and one would imagine that Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati could also be readily available - certainly before Araujo, who is part of the club's management, is actually one of the best players in the league.
