Bir Hospital initiates free brain tumor surgeries on World Brain Tumor Day
KATHMANDU: Bir Hospital, Nepal's oldest healthcare facility, has initiated free brain tumor surgeries starting today, as announced by Prof Dr Rajib Jha, Chair of the Hospital's National Brain Tumor Centre. The launch coincides with World Brain Tumor Day, observed annually on June 8. This service will be provided at no cost until June 30, offering relief to patients who would otherwise face surgery expenses ranging from Rs 100,000 to Rs 300,000 at other hospitals.
Dr Jha explained that brain tumors result from abnormal and uncontrolled growth of body cells. The risk of developing such tumors increases with age, particularly due to a compromised immune system. Furthermore, individuals with Hepatitis and HIV/AIDS are at a higher risk of developing lymphoma tumors. Exposure to radiation from procedures like X-rays and CT scans is also cited as a contributing factor to brain tumor development.
On average, Bir Hospital handles six to eight brain tumor cases, contributing to a nationwide tally of approximately 100 cases. Notably, Bir Hospital has a significant historical milestone, having performed the country's inaugural brain tumor surgery.
