Tony Awards 2024: 'The Outsiders' takes center stage with major wins
KATHMANDU: "The Outsiders," a gritty adaptation of the classic young adult novel, triumphed at the Tony Awards, winning Best New Musical and marking a significant moment for women in the industry. The musical, based on S. E. Hinton's story about rival gangs in 1960s Oklahoma, also earned Angelina Jolie her first Tony as a producer. Producer Matthew Rego thanked Hinton during his acceptance speech, emphasizing the story's enduring message of love, family, and "staying gold."
"Stereophonic," a play about a rough year in the life of a Fleetwood Mac-like band, won Best New Play and garnered the most awards of the night, totaling five. Written by David Adjmi with music by Will Butler, the play's long journey to the stage underscored the need for more arts funding in America. Adjmi's acceptance speech highlighted the decade-long struggle to bring the play to fruition.
Special guests Hillary Rodham Clinton and Jay-Z stunned the crowd, with Clinton performing "Suffs," a song about suffragettes. Kara Young made history as the first Black performer nominated for a Tony three consecutive years, winning Best Featured Actress for "Purlie Victorious." Daniel Radcliffe won his first Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for "Merrily We Roll Along," reflecting on the exceptional experience and its impact on his stage career.
