Government Revises Minimum Wages for Workers and Employees
A change to the minimum wage rates for workers and employees has been announced by the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, and it will take effect on July 15. The Ministry said in a news release on Thursday that the decision was made on July 15 at the ministerial level. Under the new structure, monthly wage earners will now receive a minimum salary of Rs 19,550. This includes a basic salary of Rs 12,170 and the remaining amount as dearness allowance.
Previously, the minimum monthly wage was Rs 17,300, which included a basic salary of Rs 10,820, based on the 2019 wage revision that followed a 2018 government announcement.
The base wage for daily wage workers is Rs 470, while the updated minimum wage is Rs 754. Part-time employees will now be paid Rs 107 per hour, while hourly wage earners will now receive Rs 101 per hour.
In accordance with Section 107 of the Labour Act, 2074 BS, which stipulates that the minimum wage be reviewed every two years, this salary revision was issued in response to the Minimum Wage Fixation Committee's suggestion.
