Arsenal's initial €47 million bid for Calafiori was rejected by Bologna
Arsenal have made a major move in the transfer market, spending €47 million to bring Bologna defender Ricardo Calafiora into Mikel Arteta's ranks, according to Corrieredellosport. However, the Serie A club rejected the initial offer and wanted a higher fee for the 22-year-old talent. Calafiore is regarded as one of Bologna's brightest prospects and has attracted interest from the Premier League's top clubs. London's "Arsenal" offer for Castel de Bollia did not live up to Bologna's expectations.
The Italian club attach a lot of importance to Calafioli, especially after his excellent performance in the Champions League and his first appearance for the national team at the European Championship in Germany, where he played in all but the game against Switzerland, which they lost due to suspension.
Chelsea's interest in Calafio further strengthens Bologna's position. The Blues are also interested in the defender, and their involvement could raise the asking price to 50 million euros.A complicating factor for any transfer would be the financial arrangement with Basel, who have a 40% sell-on clause following Calafioli's move from Roma in 2022 for around €2m. Bologna must consider this in any transaction. Giovanni Sartori performed with a speech at Rini Transfer Market: "I don't think he will go to Juventus," the club emphasizes that the club prefers to hold war warfiors, unless it is an outstanding offer.
Arsenal have previously successfully negotiated with Bologna for Fubao (who will be bought in 2021 for around €20m plus bonuses), which could influence the ongoing talks. However, Bologna's rejection of a €47m offer shows its firm stance on Calafioli's value. The club has also been in discussions with the player, who has shown a willingness to stay, but the volatile nature of the transfer market means that Bologna’s management is vigilantly exploring their options for central defenders.
