PM Dahal unveils ambitious plans to transform Nepal into IT hub
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ unveiled the government's ambitious plan to transform Nepal into an information technology (IT) hub over the next decade through the upcoming fiscal year's budget. Addressing the ‘Digital Nepal Conclave 2024,’ organized by the ICT Foundation, the Prime Minister detailed the government's target to export IT services worth Rs 3,000 billion in the next fiscal year, aiming to create 500,000 direct job opportunities and one million indirect jobs in the IT sector.
The budget sets out to position IT as a key driver of economic growth, with provisions to establish a legal framework for promoting IT innovations and developing artificial intelligence while ensuring appropriate regulatory oversight. Ensuring durable high-speed internet access, data security, and intellectual property protection are also highlighted priorities.
To support these objectives, the government plans to revise the ‘Digital Nepal Framework,’ roll out initiatives for high-speed internet in key regions like the Kathmandu Valley and Butwal, and establish an IT Park. Additionally, measures will be taken to promote the use of domestically developed software by public entities and enhance the government’s data storage and security capabilities through the upgrade of its data center.
Prime Minister Dahal underscored the government’s commitment to prioritize the development and promotion of communications and information technology, emphasizing three core areas: promoting the IT sector, fostering a digital economy, and exploring innovation and job opportunities. He noted ongoing efforts to revise relevant laws and policies to align with these priorities and highlighted the progress made in sectors like production, productivity, and employment creation.
Acknowledging the contributions of youths and entrepreneurs in the IT sector, Prime Minister Dahal announced the establishment of a new program, including a one billion rupee fund to promote startups and innovation across all seven provinces. He called for collaboration between the government and the IT sector in driving socio-economic transformation through technology.
Moreover, he reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring good governance, transparency, and corruption-free practices through improved ‘digital governance.’ The Conclave, themed “Harmonizing Digitalization and Development,” will feature discussions on various topics, including digital empowerment, sustainable development, and investment in Digital Nepal, with participation from over 600 representatives from the IT sector.
