PM KP Oli to lead Nepali delegation at 79th UN General Assembly in New York
KATHMANDU: Tomorrow, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is heading to New York to lead a delegation from Nepal to the UN Headquarters for the 79th session of the General Assembly (UNGA). With Oli's visit, Nepal is making a significant diplomatic move on the international scene.
September 26 is the day the Prime Minister is supposed to address the UNGA. The theme of the UNGA General Debate this year is "Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations."
PM Oli will participate in several significant events while he is here. He is expected to attend the September 24 General Debate Opening Session. On September 25, US President Joseph Biden is hosting a reception that he will be attending.
At the Summit of the Future, Prime Minister Oli will speak in her capacity as Chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Additionally, he will take part in two High-Level Plenary Meetings: one on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and the other on the existential concerns presented by sea level rise.
At Columbia University on September 23, Oli will give a keynote speech on Nepal's path to economic growth and democracy. This occasion demonstrates Nepal's advancements and goals in the areas of development and governance.
In addition, on September 27, the Prime Minister is expected to address the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum at Harvard University. There, he will talk about Nepal's view on shifting the focus of justice from conflict-related matters to more general climate justice concerns.
Apart from attending these esteemed gatherings, Oli is anticipated to have a meeting with Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General. In order to further solidify Nepal's foreign ties, he will also hold bilateral discussions with other world leaders during the UNGA.
Several well-known government heavyweights, including Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal, Minister of Foreign Affairs Arzu Rana Deuba, and Oli's spouse Radhika Shakya, are part of Oli's entourage.
The visit demonstrates Nepal's dedication to using international diplomacy to further its own national interests while tackling global issues like peace, sustainable development, and climate change.
After wrapping off a number of important diplomatic engagements in New York, Prime Minister Oli is anticipated to return to Nepal on September 30.
