Madhesh Leader Rajendra Mahato protests Constitution Day by sleeping on streets
KATHMANDU: On Constitution Day, Madhesh leader Rajendra Mahato staged a public protest by sleeping on the streets to express dissent against the Constitution. Mahato, the chairman of the newly formed National Liberation Party, and other leaders and activists gathered at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu for this demonstration.
During the protest, Mahato and his supporters burned a copy of the Constitution, criticizing it as incomplete and discriminatory. They voiced strong objections, arguing that the current Constitution does not adequately represent the interests of all citizens.
Mahato has called for a revolution against the Constitution, asserting that it fails to address various injustices and does not serve the broader populace. His stance reflects a significant opposition to the existing legal framework and governance structure.
Alongside his activism, Mahato has announced plans to lead a national liberation movement, in collaboration with fellow activist Suman Sayami. Their movement aims to address perceived injustices, including issues related to illegal road and river standards.
Mahato and Sayami have mobilized their supporters to advocate for a more inclusive Nepal and the establishment of a multi-national state. They had earlier urged their followers to assemble at Maitighar Mandala on October 3rd to push for these reforms.
Additionally, the Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party, led by Mahantha Thakur, has joined Mahato in opposing the Constitution. This alignment signifies a broader political challenge to the current constitutional and governance structure.
The protest highlights ongoing discontent with the Constitution among certain political factions and regional leaders, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue and potential reform to address the grievances raised.
