Panic in Delhi: Over 20 Schools Hit by Bomb Threats
Over 80 schools in Delhi and Bengaluru received bomb threats through email on Friday. This led to evacuations and major security efforts. More than 40 schools were affected in Delhi, including Richmondd Global School, Sovereign School, Modern International School, and the Heritage School.
Richmondd Global School got the threat at 10:52 AM and promptly notified the police. Bomb squads and emergency teams arrived swiftly, checked the premises thoroughly, and declared it safe. The school has resumed regular activities, according to Principal Moupali Mitra, who denounced the threat as an attempt to incite fear.
Alarming emails mentioned explosives like trinitrotoluene (TNT) hidden in schools. These were some of the threats. Some emails contained disturbing language and referenced mental health issues, claiming neglect by psychiatric services.
Authorities took the threats seriously, evacuating students and staff while bomb disposal units, fire brigades, dog squads, and cyber teams combed the buildings. No explosives have been found so far.
Other schools targeted included St. Thomas School, Vasant Valley School, The Mother’s International School, and even St. Stephen’s College, where a threat claimed a bomb was planted in the library.
Former Delhi Education Minister Atishi criticized the central government for failing to protect school children, calling the situation traumatic for students, parents, and teachers.
Earlier in the week, similar threats were reported at other Delhi schools, and one 12-year-old boy was arrested for sending threats to two institutions. Police believe some of the emails were routed through VPNs and dark web services.
The Delhi Police warned that such hoaxes are serious crimes, punishable under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita with up to five years in prison and fines. Investigators are still working to find out where the emails came from.
