Significant progress in Beni-Jomsom-Korala road project with 80% completed in 8 years
The Beni-Jomsom-Korala road project, part of the Kaligandaki corridor, has achieved 80 percent physical progress over the past eight years. This critical infrastructure project connects Triveni on the Nepal-India border with the Korala border point in China, playing a pivotal role in the development of infrastructure, economy, trade, hydropower, tourism, and religious sites in the Gandaki province.
Initiated in 2073 BS, the project aims to upgrade the 202-kilometer road stretching from Maldhunga in Parbat to the Korala border in Mustang via Myagdi, including the construction of bridges over numerous rivulets. Project Chief Dhruba Kumar Jha reported that by mid-June, the project had reached 80 percent completion.
Originally estimated to cost Rs 10 billion and scheduled for completion in the fiscal year 2079/80 BS, the project's timeline has been extended to 2082/83 BS due to delays. To date, Rs 6 billion has been spent out of the Rs 7 billion allocated for the construction of roads and bridges.
Out of the planned 105 kilometers of blacktopping, 48 kilometers have been completed, five kilometers have been cemented, and 85 kilometers have been graveled. Regarding the bridge construction, contracts for 19 out of 24 motorable bridges have been awarded, with 10 bridges completed and five currently under construction. Contracts for four bridges have been terminated, and five bridges are yet to be contracted.
