Landslide prevention efforts initiated on Beni-Jomsom road in Myagdi
KATHMANDU: Landslide prevention efforts have commenced near the Baisari Andheri rivulet, located along the border of Raghu Ganga Rural Municipality-2 and 3 in Myagdi district. This initiative follows frequent obstructions on the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road section of the Kaligandaki Corridor, a national pride project. To address the issue, workers are actively clearing landslide debris and implementing 'rock anchoring' technology on the Baisari road, which is part of the key route connecting Mustang with the national highway through the northern region of Myagdi.
Sub-engineer Sohan Jung Karki of the Beni-Jomsom-Korala Road Project reported that the landslide prevention work involves drilling into the hills above the road. This process includes 30 meters of drilling and the installation of rods to support a newly constructed retaining wall designed to stabilize the hillside.
The Kaligandaki Corridor Project has faced significant challenges from landslides at over 50 locations along the Myagdi section, compounded by flooding from tributaries and erosion by the Kali Gandaki River. These disruptions have hindered travel for residents of Raghuganga, Annapurna Rural Municipality in Myagdi, and Mustang, as well as tourists and pilgrims using the Beni-Jomsom road.
