Paris Olympic highlights: Japan leads in men's team gold medals win
On Monday, British eventing riders Ros Canter, Laura Collett, and Tom McEwen clinched team gold in a thrilling show-jumping final, surpassing France, who settled for silver due to several errors. The British team finished with a combined score of 91.3 penalty points, while France and Japan scored 103.6 and 115.8, respectively. Germany had withdrawn from contention after a rider’s fall, leaving Britain as the clear favorite for gold.
In the show-jumping final, Michael Jung of Germany defeated Australian Christopher Burton and British Laura Collett to win his fourth gold medal in individual eventing at the Olympics. Riding Chipmunk, Jung beat Burton and Collett with 21.8 penalty points, 22.4 and 23.1 points, respectively.
China’s Sheng Lihao captured his second gold medal in the men’s 10-meter air rifle event, setting an Olympic record with 252.2 points. Sweden's Victor Lindgren took silver with 251.4 points, and Croatia’s Miran Maricic won bronze. In the women’s competition, South Korea’s Ban Hyo-jin prevailed over China’s Huang Yuting in a shoot-off, with Huang still becoming the first multi-medallist shooter of the Games.
In diving, China’s Yang Hao and Lian Junjie triumphed in the men’s synchronized 10-meter platform event, with 490.35 points. Britain’s Tom Daley and Noah Williams took silver, and Canada’s Ryan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray won bronze. This victory contributes to China’s pursuit of winning all eight diving golds available.
In a thrilling last lap, British rider Tom Pidcock defeated France's Victor Koretzky to hold onto the men's mountain biking title despite a puncture. Nyjah Huston and Jagger Eaton of the United States were defeated by Yuto Horigome of Japan, who successfully defended his title in skateboarding. Japan triumphed in gymnastics after mistakes made by the Chinese team, disappointing China, while South Korea also took home the gold in men's team archery.
