NHRC urges government action to reduce fire incidents in Nepal
KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued directives to the government, emphasizing the need for effective measures to reduce fire-related incidents across the country. NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel has called upon the government to implement necessary steps to enhance safety protocols, including the provision of adequate firefighting equipment, training, preparedness, and security measures.
Furthermore, the NHRC has urged relevant authorities to disseminate awareness-raising content through various media channels to educate the public about fire prevention and safety measures. Recent incidents of fires and wildfires occurring in different parts of the country have resulted in significant loss of life and property, prompting the NHRC to closely monitor such occurrences through various means.
For instance, a devastating fire outbreak in Matihani Municipality-6 of Mahottari district on April 24 led to the destruction of 100 houses, affecting 455 individuals. Moreover, within the past 24 hours alone, one person lost their life, and four others sustained injuries in fire incidents at 49 locations, while forest fires ravaged 48 areas across different districts.
The NHRC's records indicate that in the preceding month, 14 fatalities occurred in fire incidents, with an additional eight casualties attributed to wildfires. Importantly, such incidents not only result in loss of life and property but also contribute significantly to air pollution, with Nepal consistently ranking among the most polluted countries globally in recent years. Fire and wildfire incidents have been identified as major contributors to this alarming trend, necessitating urgent action to mitigate their impact on public health and the environment.
