Threads has 175 million users in one year
This is a significant increase from the 150 million reported in April and the 130 million reported in February.
The figures show that growth has been slowing recently. Threads added 100 million users less than a week after launching on July 5, 2023, in part because of the ease of signing up with an Instagram account. The market experienced a temporary downturn as some early adopters dropped out. The meta gained traction with a relatively quick series of updates that filled the missing features and helped Threads stand out. It includes basic features like hashtags (read: hashtags) as well as TweetDeck-style multi-column views. Recently, Threads expanded access to fediverse shares and launched the long-awaited API that allows developers to use the social media platform.
That number is still well behind Elon Musk's X, which claimed 600 million monthly active users in May. However, this service has been around for 18 years. It's unclear how Threads will fare in the long run. However, threads and X go in different directions. Musk plans to make X a "super app" similar to WeChat that can handle calls, shopping and other tasks beyond social posts. The threads are narrow concentrated, and product manager Adam Mosser has repeatedly emphasized that he does not prioritize the news like X.
In the current situation, there is less pressure on the threads supplied than X. This is just one of several major social platforms in Meta's portfolio, with X having few others. Even if Threads fails, it's unlikely to do any lasting damage to the Meta's bottom line.
