Natural disasters claim 13 lives amidst incessant rainfall in Nepal
KATHMANDU: Recent incessant rainfall across Nepal has resulted in the deaths of 13 people due to floods, landslides, and lightning. According to Nepal Police, landslides claimed nine lives, while lightning strikes caused three fatalities. Additionally, one individual was swept away by a flooded river in eastern Nepal.
A devastating landslide in Kwhlosothar Rural Municipality-1 of Lamjung district buried four members of a family, identified as Rudra Man Gurung, Pancha Kumari Gurung, and her two daughters, Ichha and Namrata Gurung. Another landslide-related death occurred in Dordi Rural Municipality-9, Lamjung, where Bikal Sunar succumbed to his injuries at Lamjung Hospital, and his relative, Milan Sunar, remains hospitalized. In separate incidents, Ayusma Ranabhat of Kaski district and Hari Sunar of Pokhara died in landslides.
In Kailali district, lightning strikes killed two people, Jayram Dagaura and Shalim Chaudhary, while six others were injured. Another lightning incident in Kapilvastu district resulted in the deaths of Mahesh Kalwar and Raju Thakur. In Morang district, Premkala Chaudhary was swept away by a flood in Budhi Khola, and two of her family members are missing.
Flooding in the Khado River in Saptari district has inundated 30 houses in Rupani Rural Municipality and affected multiple wards in Kanchanrup and Tiruhut municipalities. In Biratnagar, continuous rain has caused significant waterlogging, displacing about 100 families. Over 600 houses in the Rani area are inundated, and multiple settlements are affected by floodwaters from the Kesalia River.
Biratnagar experienced 361 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period, causing severe flooding due to poor drainage systems. The Nepal Oil Corporation building and several areas in Morang district are submerged, displacing numerous families who have taken refuge in a local school.
A section of the Prithvi Highway in Pokhara Metropolitan City-14 was washed away by heavy rainfall, damaging about 12 meters of the road in two separate locations. The highway is currently open for one-way traffic, and efforts are underway to manage the situation.
