PM Dahal discusses maximizing capacity of Pokhara and Bhairahawa airports
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' hosted a high-level conference to examine ideas for improving the operating capacities of Pokhara International Airport and Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa. The conference, which took place on Friday at the PM's office in Singh Durbar, aimed to explore steps to guarantee that these vital international airports run at full capacity.
During the session, PM Dahal underscored the significance of both airports as national pride projects critical for Nepal's strategic interests. He urged all government bodies to collaborate effectively and devise solutions to ramp up operational efficiency at these facilities.
"Pokhara and Bhairahawa airports are critical projects for our country. They have received significant governmental and private investment for development. As a result, it is critical that we work toward running these airports at maximum capacity. PM Dahal highlighted that the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation Authority must quickly create and propose a solid plan.
Addressing the challenges posed by air traffic congestion at Kathmandu airport, PM Dahal emphasized the ongoing expansion efforts at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). He called for proactive measures to facilitate international flights from Bhairahawa and Pokhara, particularly for Nepali travelers and migrant workers. This includes streamlining medical clearances, labor approvals, immigration procedures, and other governmental services in Pokhara and Bhairahawa, along with establishing visa centers through diplomatic channels.
PM Dahal also advocated for providing concessions to ensure the airports operate efficiently. These may include subsidies on air tickets, ground handling services, and aviation fuel costs. He suggested coordinating with the private sector to explore concession packages in hospitality and related services. He emphasized the government's commitment to pursuing necessary diplomatic initiatives to support these efforts.
Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Hit Bahadur Tamang, assured the meeting that comprehensive preparations would be undertaken, culminating in a detailed proposal to optimize airport operations. Dr. Ganesh Prasad Pandey, Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, confirmed ongoing discussions with international airlines to enhance operational capacities at Pokhara and Bhairahawa airports.
