Parliamentary committee convenes to investigate cooperative fraud case
KATHMANDU: The inaugural session of the parliamentary investigation committee tasked with probing the cooperative fraud case is scheduled to convene today, Wednesday. Following the ongoing parliamentary proceedings, the meeting will commence at the federal parliament building, with Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire presiding.
Under mounting pressure from the opposition alliance led by the Nepali Congress (NC), the government established the "Parliamentary Investigation Special Committee." This move came after persistent demands for a thorough inquiry into the alleged cooperative fraud.
Headed by CPN-UML lawmaker Surya Bahadur Thapa Chhetri, the committee has temporarily set up its operational base within the Parliament Secretariat. Prior to its formation, the parliamentary committee had made appeals to Speaker Dev Raj Ghimire for the provision of office space and necessary staff resources.
The committee's office has been allocated within the Parliament Secretariat compound, specifically in Building No. 2, as per official sources. Established on May 28, the seven-member parliamentary committee is mandated to investigate the cooperative scam, with representation from various political parties.
Members of the probe committee include representatives from the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, as well as from the CPN-Maoist Center, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP). The formation of this committee signifies a concerted effort to address the allegations of fraud within the cooperative sector through a thorough and impartial investigation.
