NC demands resignation of Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar over controversial visa request
KATHMANDU: Following a dispute regarding her activities, the Nepali Congress (NC) has urged that Deputy Speaker Indira Rana Magar quit. At a meeting on Wednesday, senior NC officials came to the conclusion that Rana Magar had behaved improperly when she sent a letter to the US Embassy asking for expedited visas for five people.
For the 67th session of the UN's "Commission on the Status of Women," four men and one woman were asked to have expedited interviews in a letter dated February 2023. The people didn't get authorization to visit the US, despite their pleas. After the letter was recently leaked, there was a great deal of criticism.
On Monday night, at the Prime Minister's house in Baluwatar, coalition partners met and talked about the matter of Rana Magar's activities. The gravity of the problem and the political ramifications of her conduct were brought to light during this meeting.
During Tuesday's parliamentary session, members held differing opinions. Regarding Rana Magar's actions and the NC's demand that she quit, members of the government and opposition parties expressed their support and disapproval.
The scandal has spurred a wider discussion about proper behavior in parliament and whether or not it is permissible to use official channels for irrelevant or personal matters. Due to the examination of her conduct, Rana Magar's reputation has suffered in the political sphere.
The NC's position on upholding parliamentary decorum and accountability is reflected in its demand for her resignation. Her actions are being closely examined in light of the letter leak and the reactions that followed.
