Former President Bhandari’s planned visit to China postponed indefinitely
KATHMANDU: Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari's scheduled visit to China has been postponed indefinitely due to health concerns, as disclosed by sources close to the CPN-UML party. Despite initial preparations for her trip around mid-July, it has been delayed, with the decision coming amidst internal discord within the UML leadership, including objections raised by party chair KP Oli regarding Bhandari's proposed visit.
Reports suggest that Bhandari had intentions to re-engage in active politics within the UML. According to sources, China has been informed of Bhandari's inability to fly soon owing to health issues. Both the government and the UML party are purportedly working to maintain discretion regarding the deferment of her visit, highlighting the sensitivity of the matter.
China had previously expected Bhandari to travel in her role as a UML leader in addition to her role as a former president. Having served as the deputy chair of the UML before assuming the presidency in 2015, Bhandari has upheld formal ties with the party. However, her decision to renew her party membership on April 13 has raised questions about her potential re-entry into active politics, prompting some to perceive it as conflicting with her constitutional role. Chinese officials have reportedly advocated for unifying Nepal's communist factions amidst the divisions within the erstwhile Nepal Communist Party.
