Quest headsets have been malfunctioning for weeks due to Meta's "software update issue"
Meta has updated its Quest -support site to address the "software update problem" that has caused some Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest 3 headphones to stop working. According to the company, although most users can now operate their devices as usual, Meta is still working "actively at the solution to all users".
This development can be a relief for Quest owners who previously reported that Meta refused to repair or replace the headset, which was not a guarantee. Several Reddit users shared emails confirming that Meta is now providing out-of-warranty service for affected devices. Additionally, a community manager on Meta's support forum recently announced that customer support has updated guidance to help affected users.
Initially, on December 6, Meta acknowledged that software update issues were affecting “some new Quest 3S devices,” but the statement made no mention of Quest 2 or Quest 3 headsets. Furthermore, the company did not specify the software version involved in its earlier communications. However, a report this week from UploadVR suggests that the issue isn't limited to the Quest 3S.
On December 9th, Meta published Quest v71, the most recent upgrade. This update introduced features such as an improved virtual desktop display connection method and keyboard pass-through functionality for virtual environments. It is still unclear whether this update is related to the crashing issues, but Meta's ongoing efforts to resolve the issue show that the company is committed to supporting affected users.
