A floating "Play something" button is being tested by YouTube
YouTube uses a new running button in its Android application to accidentally select videos that users can watch. The button is placed above the lower navigation band, which provides a quick method that can be found with one click.
Currently, the feature uses YouTube's short video player to display videos, although the content isn't in the vertical format typically associated with short videos. It remains to be seen whether this will change before the feature is rolled out more widely. This is not the first time YouTube has tried to make a random video selection.
Last year, the platform has tested a variety of iterations, including the "Play" prohibited and buttons similar to the black and white YouTube logo. Interestingly, the name of the feature echoes Netflix’s now-defunct “Play Something,” which launched in 2021 as a tool to randomly recommend content but was discontinued in 2022 under the name “Surprise Me.”
The current iteration of YouTube’s “Play Something” feature reflects the platform’s ongoing efforts to improve user engagement and make content discovery easier.
