Nepal Police seize Rs 1.6 million in suspicious cash from Indian border
KATHMANDU: On Wednesday morning, a team of police officials apprehended Lalit Das, 48, from Bariyarpatti Rural Municipality-2, Siraha, at the Gorgama border crossing in Siraha district. Das was found in possession of Rs 1.6 million of unknown origin while attempting to enter Nepal from India.
The arrest followed a tip-off from Indian authorities about a suspicious individual carrying a large sum of money. The Kachanari Police Post team, led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Birendra Shah, stopped Das at 9:25 am as he was riding a bike with registration number Sa 10 Pa 9853.
When the police inspected, they found that Das had the money around his waist, wrapped in a blanket. There were 1200 banknotes of Rs. 500 value and 1000 banknotes of Rs. 1000 denomination in the currency.
The authorities seized both the money and the bike. Das has been detained for further questioning as the source of the funds remains undisclosed.
The District Police Office, Siraha, is continuing the investigation into the origin of the money and the circumstances surrounding its possession.
