Indian national accused of cash smuggling flees gaur customs office custody
KATHMANDU: An incident unfolded involving Gajendra Raya, a 31-year-old Indian national from East Champaran, Bihar, who was apprehended by the Armed Police Force (APF) at their Base Camp Sarmujawa in Budhimai Municipality-7, Rautahat. During a search, Rs 1.48 million was found concealed under the seat of a motorcycle (Br 05 Bb 6212) that Raya was using. Following the arrest, Raya and the seized money and motorcycle were handed over to the Gaur Customs Office.
While preparations were underway to formally submit Raya to the Customs Office, an unexpected event occurred on Thursday noon. Raya managed to evade custody by scaling the office wall, purportedly under the pretext of using the washroom. This escape took place despite the ongoing virtual meeting between Customs Office chief Amrendra Singh and the Ministry of Finance.
Singh, in the midst of the virtual meeting, was informed of Raya's flight from custody. The APF, however, affirmed that they had completed the transfer of Raya, along with the confiscated cash and motorcycle, to the Customs Office. Battalion-11 of the APF subsequently issued a press statement confirming that the case against Gajendra Raya, identified as an alleged Hundi trader under case number 771, had been formally handed over to the Customs Office.
