Kailali achieves self-sufficiency in milk production
KATHMANDU: Kailali district's commercial raising of improved varieties of buffaloes and cows has allowed it to become self-sufficient in milk production. The province government implemented a subsidy program, which led to a notable increase in milk output. In fiscal year 2078/79, it was 96 metric tons; by 2080/81, it was 168 metric tons.
The district now exports between 2,000 to 2,500 liters of milk daily to other districts. There are 52 officially registered dairy farms, and 156 people have gained direct employment through these farms. Additionally, Kailali hosts 14 dairy cooperatives, 44 private dairies, and one Khaptad Industries Pvt. Ltd, with an estimated annual business of around Rs 188.4 million.
According to the Livestock and Fisheries Development Directorate, Sudurpaschim Province, including Kailali and Kanchanpur, is approaching self-sufficiency not only in milk but also in meat, eggs, and fish production.
