Legal action initiated against 38 industries for producing substandard food and beverages
KATHMANDU: The Food Technology and Quality Control Division Office has taken legal action against 38 industries for producing substandard food and beverages. These proceedings, initiated under the Food Act 2023 BS, were conducted during the fiscal year 2080/81 BS.
Jyoti Acharya, the office chief, revealed that 38 out of 77 industries monitored were found to be in violation of food hygiene and quality standards. According to the Food Act, businesses involved in producing or selling contaminated or substandard food can face penalties of up to five years in prison, a fine of Rs 50,000, or both.
Starting August 3, the penalties will be significantly increased under the new Food Hygiene and Quality Act, 2081 BS, which introduces fines of Rs 500,000 and imprisonment for up to five years for such offenses.
In addition to these actions, the office addressed 21 complaints in the last fiscal year and has been actively advising the public against using ink newspapers for food storage, synthetic colors in food products, and banned substances like calcium and carbohydrates for ripening fruits.
