Kathmandu Valley rivers nearing alert levels amid heavy rainfall
KATHMANDU: After intense overnight rains, the Weather Forecast Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a warning due to rising river levels in the Kathmandu Valley. River levels in places like Sundarijal, Kapan, Naikap, and Babarmahal are getting dangerously close to warning levels due to heavy rainfall.
Currently, the Bagmati, Bishnumati, and Dhobi Khola rivers are nearing their alert thresholds, with the Khokana water measuring station on the Bagmati River reporting levels above the alert limit. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to stay alert until 9 am as river levels continue to increase.
In the Sindhupalchowk district, the Melamchi, Indrawati, Balefi, and their tributaries are also more vulnerable to flash floods when there is continuous rainfall. To reduce their risk of flooding and landslides, people have been asked by the Division to adopt preventative steps.
