Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah enforces 20-meter no-build zone along river banks
KATHMANDU: The development of any physical constructions, including governmental and private buildings, within 20 meters of Kathmandu's riverbanks has been prohibited, according to the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), Balen Shah. This ruling complies with Supreme Court and Council of Ministers directives, which are intended to reduce flood damage and guarantee appropriate riverbank management.
In light of recent significant flood damage, Mayor Shah emphasized the need to clear river and stream coastal areas. He warned that the city administration would enforce these standards rigorously and take appropriate action against non-compliance. The government has designated specific zones as construction-prohibited, with 20 meters set for the Bagmati, Bishnumati, and Manohara rivers, and 4 to 12 meters for other rivers.
Mayor Shah urged the public in a Facebook post to follow these requirements while planning development, submitting maps, dealing with real estate, or managing mortgage properties. He stressed that failure to follow these requirements could result in issues, emphasizing the necessity of compliance in riverbank protection.
