Habeas corpus petition filed for medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai
KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has received a writ of habeas corpus petition about the detention of medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai, who has a contentious past. Prasai's legal representative submitted the petition on Monday.
Achyut Kuikel, the SC Spokesperson, confirmed that the writ has been received and is currently under review for registration. This legal action reflects concerns about the legality of Prasai’s detention.
On Sunday afternoon, Prasai was taken into custody at his home and later that evening, he was admitted to Bir Hospital. When the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau took him out of the hospital to question him, his status worsened.
The Kathmandu District Court has approved the extension of Prasai’s detention, allowing the police to hold him for an additional three days as per their request. This decision underscores the serious nature of the investigation.
The arrest followed a complaint lodged by Tika Sangraula (Jwala), a central member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), along with other victims who alleged misconduct by Prasai.
He is accused of making offensive remarks about other people, character assassination, and prostitution-related offenses. Due to these grave accusations, Prasai's actions are being closely examined.
The ongoing legal proceedings and the habeas corpus petition highlight the intricate nature of Prasai's case and its possible wider implications for Nepal's political climate and law enforcement.
