76 wild animals die in CNP in FY 2080/81
KATHMANDU: Chitwan National Park (CNP) stated that 76 wild animals from 15 different species died in the fiscal year 2080/81 BS, with spotted deer accounting for the majority of these deaths. According to Information Officer Ganesh Prasad Tiwari, 22 spotted deer perished naturally, and two were murdered by dogs. In addition, 21 rhinos perished—18 from natural causes, 2 from poaching, and 1 unknown.
The park also reported the deaths of eight tigers, all from natural causes, and six barking deer were found dead naturally. Five elephants and four deer also died of natural causes. During the same period, two ghariyal crocodiles died, one due to natural causes and one with the cause still unknown.
Two marsh crocodiles, one wild boar, and three other species of animals were among the other reported deaths, all of which were attributed to natural causes. Seventy animals perished due to natural reasons, two due to poaching, two from dog attacks, and two whose causes are yet unknown.
Last year, the CNP rescued 222 animals, with the highest number being 141 pythons. Additionally, 33 snakes, 11 tigers, and an equal number of marsh crocodiles were rescued. Other rescued animals included six spotted deer, three rhinos, two each of deer, boar, and leopard, as well as tortoises and ghariyal crocodiles. Nine animals from other species were also rescued during this period.
