173 dead and thousands displaced in landslides and floods
KATHMANDU: In the past two months, heavy rainfall in Nepal has resulted in the deaths of 173 people due to various disasters, including floods and landslides. The fatalities are distributed across several regions: 3 in Kathmandu Valley, 26 in Koshi Province, 7 in Madhesh Province, 31 in Bagmati Province, 54 in Gandaki Province, 33 in Lumbini Province, 8 in Karnali Province, and 11 in Far West Province.
The disasters have also led to numerous injuries, with 11 reported in Kathmandu Valley, 37 in Koshi Province, 11 in Madhesh Province, 23 in Bagmati Province, and 46 in Gandaki Province. Other regions, including Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim Provinces, have also reported significant numbers of injuries. The injured have been taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Rescue efforts have been initiated, with 28 people rescued in Kathmandu Valley, 49 in Koshi Province, 12 in Bagmati Province, 14 in Gandaki Province, and smaller numbers in Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim Provinces. Despite these efforts, significant challenges remain, particularly in areas severely affected by floods.
The floods have caused extensive damage, with 384 houses inundated, and additional damage to 275 houses, 140 sheds, 43 bridges, 2 schools, and 2 government offices. Additionally, 812 animals have died, and 4,322 families have been displaced. Search and rescue operations for missing persons are ongoing, as the full extent of the damage continues to be assessed.
