Taplejung becomes a hydropower hotspot as many projects approach completion.
Taplejung Powers Up Hydroelectric Hub Takes Shape.
Nepal's Taplejung district is emerging as a powerhouse, with multiple hydropower projects on the verge of bolstering the national grid. The recent integration of the 73 MW Sanima Middle Tamor Hydropower Project marks a significant step forward, and even more generation capacity is on the horizon.
Three projects along the Kabeli River are gearing up to join the grid by October, collectively contributing 48 MW. These include the 13.5 MW Super Kabeli Khola 'A', the 12 MW Super Kabeli Khola Cascade, and the 21.93 MW Kabeli-3. With civil construction nearing completion, barring any setbacks, commercial production is expected to begin later this year.
Developed by separate entities (Snow Rivers Limited, Hilton Hydro Energy, and Kabeli Hydropower Company), these projects haven't been without their hurdles. Floods and landslides, particularly last year's severe flooding in areas like Yamfudin and Khewang, have caused infrastructure damage and delays.
Despite the challenges, progress is evident. The project sites, located 54 km from the nearest major road, are now accessible thanks to 25 km of access roads built by the developers. The generated electricity will flow to the
Panchthar Amarpur substation via a nearly completed 31 km, 132 KV transmission line. Tower construction and wire pulling are actively underway for this crucial link.
