Pokhara eliminates Biratnagar Kings in NPL super over
KATHMANDU: In their Nepal Premier League (NPL) matchup, the Pokhara Avengers defeated the Biratnagar Kings in a thrilling super-over on Thursday, eliminating them from playoff contention. The exciting ending proved Pokhara's determination to maintain their hopes of making the playoffs.
After winning the toss, Biratnagar chose to bat first and set a target of 140 runs, finishing their innings at 139/7 in 20 overs. With 45 runs, Scott Edwards was the leading scorer, followed by Lokesh Bam with 26 and Nicholas Kirton with 19. Dinesh Kharel and Kushal Bhurtel each claimed one wicket, while Sagar Dhakal and Raymon Reifer each took two, demonstrating the potent performance of Pokhara's bowlers.
Pokhara Avengers responded by reaching 139/6 in their 20 overs, matching Biratnagar's score. With 39 runs, Andries Gous spearheaded the chase, helped along by vital hits from Raymon Reifer (34), and Kushal Bhurtel (31). Pratish GC was Biratnagar's most outstanding bowler, taking four wickets to keep the game balanced.
The match was decided in a super-over since the scores were tied. When Pokhara batted first, he set a lofty goal of 19 runs. Raymon Reifer's spectacular batting, which included two sixes and a four in the first four balls of Sandeep Lamichhane's over, proved to be the deciding factor.
In the super-over, Biratnagar's reaction was insufficient as they only scored five runs without hitting any boundaries. Pokhara won handily as Martin Guptill and Nicholas Kirton found it difficult to handle Reifer's tight bowling.
As Pokhara Avengers continue to battle for a position in the next round, this victory strengthened their hopes of making the playoffs. The loss ended Biratnagar Kings' chances of qualifying for the playoffs, making them the second team behind Lumbini Lions to be knocked out of the running.
