This is the Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo has revealed the first details of the long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2, which is expected to be released in 2025. Its updated Joy-Con controllers, now black with colored accents, attach to the sides of the console rather than sliding on and off. This revised attachment system, rumored to utilize magnets, allows for a more seamless connection.
The controller also features a new button below the Home button on the right Joy-Con, as well as larger SL and SR buttons for improved usability.
Another major improvement is the addition of a USB-C port next to the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the console. The stand has also been redesigned into a more sturdy U-shape, which provides better stability when the device is used in tabletop mode.
The Switch 2 dock has a more rounded look, while the system will still support the controller grip to transform the Joy-Cons into a traditional gamepad. Interestingly, the video suggests that the Joy-Cons can also be used as a mouse-like input device, thus expanding their functionality. On the software side, the only game shown in the announcement video is a new Mario Kart game. Nintendo has also confirmed that the Switch 2 will support backward compatibility for physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.
However, the company cautions that some titles may not work or be fully optimized for the new system, leaving room for potential compatibility concerns for certain legacy games. Fans can expect an in-depth announcement during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2, 2025. Console. Tickets for these events will be available starting January 17th at 3:00 PM ET via Nintendo's website.
