Microsoft delays the arrival of the Recall function, which will not arrive with Copilot PCs.
Microsoft's much-talked-about Recall feature will launch with Copilot Plus PCs next week. However, the ability to take screenshots of everything you do on the new laptops has reportedly been removed. Microsoft is reportedly reserving the feature so it can be tested through the Windows Insider program. This is contrary to the original announcement which claimed to ship Recall as an opt-in feature with additional security improvements.
In its official blog, Microsoft said that there will be an additional update on the Recall (preview) feature Copilot PCs. “Recall will now shift from a preview experience broadly available for Copilot+ PCs on June 18, 2024, to a preview available first in the Windows Insider Program (WIP) in the coming weeks. After receiving feedback on the recall from our Windows Insider community, as we usually do, we plan to make Recall (preview) available for all Copilot PCs soon," the company said in a blog post.
Microsoft has announced that the company is adapting the Recall release model to leverage the expertise of the Windows Insider community to ensure that the experience meets Microsoft's high quality and security standards. "Once Recall (preview) is available to Windows Insiders, we'll publish a blog post with details on how to get the preview," read the blog post. This basically means that Windows Insiders or anyone else with a Copilot+ PC will not be able to use the rollback feature. Also known as "Photo Memories", the controversial feature takes background screenshots to help users instantly find previously viewed content. The feature reportedly uses artificial intelligence on the device. After the announcement in late May, some researchers and analysts raised security and privacy concerns. Later, Microsoft updated the Copilot PC setting process.
This is the second Microsoft blog update on the rollback feature. On June 9, Microsoft published a new blog by corporate vice president of Windows and Devices Pavan Davuluri that addressed key concerns about Recall, a key feature of ARM-powered Copilot PCs.
