Audio platform Pocket FM taps into AI tools to help it expand
India-based audio platform Pocket FM offers over 200,000 hours of content on its service, but its CEO Rohan Nayak believes the platform still has room to grow in terms of creating original content and expanding its library across multiple genres and sub-genres. The easiest way to do this is to leverage AI tools to help with audio production, strategizing, and tailoring these stories to different regions.
"We still believe that our content catalog is insufficient for our users. "There are a lot of genres and subgenres that aren't in our library. We don't feel like we have the depth of content to be considered adult entertainment," Nayak told over the phone. The company has already concluded an exceptional partnership with Evlenlabs and has converted the text into an audio series. As a result, the production was 5 times higher than in the audio series generated by professionals, and costs 30 times lower. "We have already tested how these AI adaptations work in different markets with encouraging results.
While we are still in the process of correcting errors in our model, we believe the technology is good enough to be used for show production," Nayak said. One of the Pocket FM tools is trying to adopt a story in various areas. The company said that instead of seeing a simple translation, it formed an internal model that manages cultural nuances when converting a story from a certain area to another. Pocket FM said it needed to address the pop-up limitations of open source templates, as well as create relationship maps between different story entities to maintain character consistency.
Another tool for the company's writers is to act as a creative assistant, testing out their work and helping with alternative storylines or giving them story ideas. The company also plans to incorporate insights from historical data into the tool to inform editors about what's working on the platform.
Additionally, the company is also investing in creating a success engine that will leverage the insights the platform provides about whether a show will be a hit.Pocket FM's ultimate goal is to expand its catalogue as it produces some content in-house and creates shows through a network of editors. But to scale and become more popular, they need to create hit shows."Big hits drive every content platform. We have a good distribution funnel with user-generated content, but it's still hard to find the big hits.
Pocket FM has achieved promising results with the introduction of AI. They have over 40,000 series on their platform with the help of AI in terms of audio creation. Plus, the company has generated $3 million in revenue from them. Overall, the platform clocked in $127 million in financial year 2024. The most difficult task for the company is to find the appropriate balance of AI creative, support creative, and quickly turn on content. There is always a risk that people use AI to accelerate the quality of content production and compromise. As a result, the platform becomes filled with mediocre content, and it becomes tricky for algorithms to highlight good shows.
