Instagram's CEO says social media requires more context because of AI
In a series of posts on Threads this afternoon, Instagram head Adam Mosseri cautioned users against blindly trusting images they encounter online, citing the rise of AI-generated content that can easily be mistaken for reality. Mosseri emphasized the need for critical thinking, encouraging users to evaluate the source of the content and urging social media platforms to assist in providing this context.
For this reason, platforms also need to offer more information about the individuals or accounts sharing the content, enabling users to better gauge its reliability. Mosseri’s advice aligns with the growing awareness that AI tools, such as chatbots or image generators, can convincingly present false information. Just as users are advised to scrutinize AI-powered search results, Mosseri recommends checking the credibility of the source behind any claim or image.
Currently, Meta's platforms, including Instagram and Threads, offer limited tools for providing the kind of source context Mosseri envisions. However, the company has recently hinted at potential updates to its content policies, suggesting that changes may be on the horizon.
What Mosseri describes bears some resemblance to user-driven moderation efforts like Community Notes on X (formerly Twitter) or the customizable moderation filters seen on Bluesky. Whether Meta plans to implement similar features remains unclear, but the company has a track record of adopting ideas from its competitors.
