Lomanthang Rural Municipality launches afforestation campaign for greener future
KATHMANDU: Lomanthang Rural Municipality has initiated an afforestation campaign titled 'Our Campaign: Green Lomanthang, Happy Lomanthang', aiming to enhance the greenery of Lomanthang in Upper Mustang, adjacent to China.
Chairman Tasi Nharvu Gurung stated that the campaign intends to plant 10,000 pipal saplings across the barren hills of Lomanthang during the ongoing fiscal year. He emphasized that the tree plantation initiative aims to mitigate the impacts of natural disasters induced by climate change and conserve biodiversity for ecological benefits.
According to Gurung, the rural municipality had launched a tree plantation campaign in the previous fiscal year by planting 5,000 saplings. This year, they plan to double the effort by planting 10,000 saplings, distributing 2,000 saplings in each ward of the municipality.
Local representatives, members of the Local Mother's Group and Youth Club, along with residents, actively participated in the afforestation campaign. Lomanthang, renowned as the city of mud, stands as a prominent tourist destination celebrated for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, serving as a significant center of Tibetan culture with its historic caves, Himalayan vistas, and cultural richness attracting tourists from far and wide.
